Single Photon Detection Workshop at ALBA

Satellite Workshop to the Expert Group meeting of the SENSE initiative

Detectors capable of detecting a single photon are an enabling technology for many scientific and engineering disciplines. By increasing detection efficiency, time resolution, energy resolution and spatial resolution, new instrumentation can be developed or existing systems improved providing unprecedented sensitivity ultimately allowing to address problems on the forefront of science and technology.

The final meeting of the SENSE initiative, will take place at the Spanish Synchrotron light source Alba in Barcelona on July 9th. Using this opportunity, Alba would like to organize a satellite workshop on July 10th allowing a broader Spanish and Catalan community to interact with the members of the SENSE Expert group. Goal of this meeting is to connect developers and technology providers of the region with the Expert group members. The meeting will cover a wide spectral range (from IR to gamma-rays) and is focused on the following sensor and detection technologies:

Vacuum detectors like photo multiplier tubes (PMT) and multichannel plate detectors (MCP)
Silicon- photomultipliers (SiPM)
Other low-level light sensors like
- Superconducting transition edge sensors (TES)
- Neganov-Luke light devices
- Organic sensors
- Abalone concepts

In addition, all necessary auxiliary technology, like Application Specific Integrated Circuitry (ASIC) development, acquisition electronic development, and data management will be included in the discussion.

The meeting will provide an overview of the SENSE project, selected talks about technology developments and applications, and a round table discussion focused on possible collaborations in the different spectral ranges.

SENSE: Roadmap of LLLsensors - what comes next?

We are happy to announce our final meeting on July 9th at the ALBA synchrotron in Barcelona, Spain. This workshop is planned as an open meeting to present the final SENSE Roadmap and the recommended strategy towards developing the ultimate low light-level photosensors. Some other elements of SENSE will be also introduced and discussed how they can sustain after SENSE.

A working dinner with discussion will be held the previous night, July 8th (with registration).

A visit to the ALBA synchrotron is possible directly after the meeting on July 9th (with registration).

SENSE Detector School

We are happy to announce the SENSE Detector School at the Ringberg Castle in Kreuth am Tegernsee in Bavaria, Germany, from 19 - 22 June 2019. The 2.5 days mini-school for PhD and master students aims to inform about the forefront developments on low light-level detectors.
The speciality of the school is the small group of students with a continuous possibility to discuss with the teachers

The participation of 25 students is sponsored by SENSE. You can apply for the school until 3 May 2019 with a letter of motivation. The nomination of participants will be announced on 10 May 2019. We aim to achieve a balanced mix of working topics as well as gender and nationalities.If required, childcare can also be organised.

As soon as the timetable has been finalised, a decision will be made on a possible contribution from the students.

SiPM workshop: from fundamental research to industrial applications

SiPMworkshop The conference “SiPM workshop: from fundamental research to industrial applications” will be held in Bari, Italy from October 2, 2019 to October 4, 2019.

The conference is organized by Università degli Studi di Bari, Politecnico di Bari and Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare di Bari.

The main goal of the workshop is to review the main fields in which Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPMs) are being employed, understand the present limitations and define R&D goals for their improvement.

Experts from different fields will meet to review SiPM requirements in their respective area of interest and discuss solutions, including most recent and emerging developments in SiPM design and production, front-end electronics, and new characterization methods for optimizing SiPM performances.

Participation from industry is welcomed and desired.

Abstract submission will be open from April 1 to June 15 and registration deadline is August 31 (early registration untli July 15).

CTA symposium

Screenshot 2019 02 06 CTA Symposium The theme for the First CTA Symposium is “Science opportunities with CTA” and will take place at the historical Teatro Duse in Bologna 6-9 May 2019 (https://www.cta-symposium.com). It will focus on the novel investigations CTA will bring to the field and its synergies with other wavebands and messengers. It will also cover instrument characteristics, analysis tools and opportunities for guest investigators and how coordinated observations with CTA will have a significant impact on the exciting new era of multi-wavelength and multi-messenger astrophysics.Registration for the First CTA symposium is now open.

The deadline to submit abstracts has been extended to March 10, 2019. The scientific organising committee (SOC) will consider the submission for inclusion in the preliminary programme and will notify the authors whether their contribution has been selected for an oral/poster presentation by March 29, 2019.

16th Baksan School on Astroparticle Physics

Baksan The aim of the Baksan School on Astroparticle Physics is to cover topics in both experimental and theoretical astroparticle physics. The program of the school will include three main lecture courses followed by tutorials, practical and discussion sessions, together with several separate lectures, special session for participants presentations and excursion to underground laboratories of the Baksan Neutrino Observatory.

SENSE will participate with a tutorial on SiPMs and a corresponding lecture about their application in astroparticle physics.

The School is addressed at advanced masters students, graduate students and postdocs working in astroparticle physics. The School will be held at a picturesque location in Baksan valley.

International Cosmic Day

The 7th International Cosmic Day will be on 29^th of November 2018.

The International Cosmic Day brings together students, teachers and scientists to talk and learn about Cosmic Rays. During the International Cosmic Day (ICD) students will find answers to questions like: What are cosmic particles? Where do they come from? How can they be measured? Furthermore, own measurements can be performed or provided data can be analyzed and used to participate in the day. Groups all over the world will come together for a video chat to compare and discuss their results. This gives students the opportuniy to work like a real scientist in an international collaboration.

At KIT we will perform some measurements with the show case experiment developed within the SENSE project.

Vienna Conference on Instrumentation

VCI

The Vienna Conference on Instrumentation (VCI) will take place from Monday to Friday, February 18-22, 2019 and present the newest developments in detectors for particle, astro-particle and nuclear physics and their applications in biology, medicine, neutron scattering and synchrotron radiation. The deadline for abstract submission is already closed.

The conference proceedings will appear as special volume in the journal Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section A.

5th International Workshop on New Photon-Detectors

PD18 The International Workshop on New Photon-Detectors PD18 will take place at the University of Tokyo, Tokyo, Japan between Nov. 27th and 29th as the fifth edition in a PD workshop series.

The workshop aims at discussing recent progress and development of photo-sensors including SiPM, APD, Hybrid-PMT, MCP-PMT and other new photo-sensors. Their applications to different fields such as particle physics, nuclear physics, cosmic-ray physics, astronomy and medical sciences and the instrumentations related to the photo-detectors will also be covered.

The workshop program will be composed of plenary sessions with invited and contributed talks. There will also be poster sessions.

FAST closing meeting

Over the last 4 years the FAST COST Action TD1401 established a multidisciplinary network that brings together European experts from academia and industry to ultimately achieve scintillator-based detectors with timing precision of better than 100ps, in particular to enable significant breakthroughs in diagnostic medicine and high luminosity particle physics. This September the closing meeting takes place in Athens from 26th to 28th.

This 5th annual meeting of COST Action TD1401 will take place at the CIVITEL-ATTIK Hotel as follow:
